Skin Cancer

Skin cancer refers to a group of cancers that form in the skin and on rare occasions in other areas of the body such as the mouth, eyes or intestines. A result of abnormal cell production, skin cancer has the potential to invade or spread if left unchecked. At Blue Tree Clinics, our dermatology experts understand that being diagnosed with cancer is an emotionally traumatic experience that can have a profound impact on a person’s life.

If you suspect that you may have contracted skin cancer, make sure you give our team a call right away. We will arrange an initial consultation with one of our dermatologists, and you can expect complete discretion, compassion and sensitivity throughout as well as the best skin cancer treatment in Dubai.

Types

There are three main types of skin cancer which are as follows:

Basal-cell Cancer (BCC)

Otherwise known as basal-cell carcinoma, this type is characterised in some cases by the presence of a raised ulceration. In other instances, it will appear as a raised area of skin with blood vessels running across it. These areas of skin are usually painless, and the cancer itself develops slowly with little to no risk of metastasising or becoming life-threatening.

Squamous-cell Cancer (SCC)

Cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma (cSCC) as it also referred to as can also be identified by the presence of an ulcer. Alternatively, SCC can also present as a lump that is hard to the touch and usually has a scaly or crusty top to it. Unlike BCC, SCC has an increased chance of spreading.

Melanoma

Melanomas are a particularly aggressive form of skin cancer that typically appears in the form of a mole that has undergone some sort of change. This could be in size, shape, and colour and in most cases the mole will become either sore or itchy. Melanoma is regarded as one of the most dangerous types of skin cancer and as such, should be identified as quickly as possible.

Causes

One of the most predominant causes of skin cancer is ultraviolet (UV) radiation which occurs as a result of direct exposure to the Sun or through the use of tanning beds. Individuals with less pigment in their skin are at a greater risk as are people with HIV/ AIDS. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation increases the chance of developing all three types of skin cancer.

Other causes of skin cancer include:

  • Certain genetic conditions
  • HPV infections
  • Immunosuppressive medications
  • Ionizing radiation
  • Non-healing wounds (chronic)
  • Tobacco

Treatments

Before starting any skin cancer treatment in Dubai, our dermatologist will first examine the affected area and carry out what is known as a biopsy. This involves taking a tissue sample which is then analysed under a microscope. The dermatologist will be able to identify whether cancer is present and what type you are suffering from. For cases of non-melanoma skin cancer (basal-cell and squamous-cell), we can provide laser therapy as well as chemotherapy and retinoids. In severe cases, Mohs surgery may be required which involves excising the cancerous tissue.

In the case of melanoma, our dermatologists are capable of providing the following treatment options:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Sentinel lymph node mapping
  • Surgical excision

To help you find the treatment method that works for you, we will talk you through the available options and answer any questions that you might have. Our extensive expertise and knowledge ensure that you will receive the solution that is right for you so you can have complete peace of mind.
